5/5の私の誕生日にSNS上で多くのタイ人が「おめでとうございます」と言ってくれたが、これはいつものことで、一般にタイ人は礼儀正しく、困った人々を助け、生き物を助けるといった美徳が見られる。

■誕生日の出来事
私にはSNS上で、特にFacebookでタイ人の友だちが多い。
5月5日の私の誕生日にFBで、そのタイ人たちの多くが、私の誕生日の投稿に「おめでとうございます」とコメントを書いてくれた。
タイ人の多くは、礼儀正しく、人々を助け、生き物を殺めず助ける。
これらは、ブッダの教えを忠実に守っていることから来るものが多いのだろう。
■釈尊の教え
これらに関連する釈尊の教えを、原始仏典『スッタニパータ』からいくつか紹介する。
まず、「礼儀正しさ」から。
もしも汝が＜賢明で共同し礼儀正しい明敏な同伴者＞を得たならば、あらゆる危難にうち勝ち、こころ喜び、気をおちつかせて、かれとともに歩め。
タイ人たちが挨拶する時に合掌することも、もちろん仏教に関連している。
次は、人々を助け、生き物に対して慈悲の心をもつこと。
母親が命がけで
我が子を守るように
すべての生き物に対して
限りない（慈悲の）心を
育みましょう。
日本人の多くは、「葬式仏教」などと揶揄されるが、「形式的に」仏教徒であっても、ブッダの教えを驚くほど知らない。
その意味でも、タイ人の行動には、われわれが見習うべきところがあるだろう。

*Birthday events
I have many Thai friends on social media, especially on Facebook.
On my birthday on May 5th, many of those Thai people commented on my birthday post saying "Congratulations'' on Facebook.
Most Thai people are polite, help people, and save living things without killing them.
Much of this probably comes from faithfully following the teachings of the Buddha.
*Shakyamuni's teachings
I will introduce some of Shakyamuni's teachings related to these from the original Buddhist text, Sutta-Nipāta.
First, let's talk about politeness.
If you have found a companion who is wise, cooperative, courteous, and perceptive, walk with him with joy and calmness of mind, triumphing over all dangers.
The way Thai people put their palms together when greeting each other is, of course, related to Buddhism.
The next step is to help people and have compassion for living things.
My mother is risking her life
Like protecting my child
for all living things
A boundless (compassionate) heart
Let's nurture it.
Many Japanese people are ridiculed as "funeral Buddhists'' but even if they are "formally'" Buddhists, they are surprisingly ignorant of the Buddha's teachings.
In that sense, there is something we should learn from the actions of the Thai people.
